プロローグ 輪廻転生ブッダの世界へ
人口よりも神々が多いとされる国、ネパール。
地球上でもっとも標高の高いエベレストが属するヒマラヤ山脈の麓にある。
国民の大半はヒンドゥー教徒であるが、仏教の開祖である釈迦、後にブッダとなる人物の生誕地だ。
作品撮りで訪れたネパールで僕は、ある瞑想を体験して、人生観が変わったという人物に出会った。
その瞑想は、ヴィパッサナー瞑想。ヴィパッサナーとはインドの古語であるパーリ語で「洞察」という意味を持つ。
ブッダが最終的に悟りを開いた瞑想法として知られ、その指導が受けられる施設は世界各国にある。宗教、国籍、性別を問わず、参加費用は無料。営利が目的ではない。
日本にもヴィパッサナー瞑想の施設があることを知り、コースに参加した。洞察力を磨くことで、写真家としての可能性を探究したいと思ったからだ。
ヴィパッサナー瞑想の真髄は、呼吸や感覚を深く意識し、からだと心の内側を見つめて、自己の本質を探ることにある。
そして僕は瞑想中に不思議なビジョンを見た。
それは、太陽の光に照らされた巨大な遺跡を背景に、祈りを捧げる少女の姿だった。
この場所はどこなんだろう。そして少女は誰?
背景の遺跡は、エジプトや南米にある古代遺跡ではなく、直感的に仏教遺跡だと感じた。
ヴィパッサナー瞑想の中心地であるミャンマーは、ブッダの教えをもっとも忠実に守る上座部仏教の聖地だ。一連の繋がりを考えると、ビジョンで見た場所はバガン遺跡の可能性が高い。
仏教の世界では、人は繰り返し、何度も生まれ変わるとされている。この輪廻転生という考え方では、現世は前世の行い（業）によって決まるという。
もしかすると、ビジョンは現世で自分が行うべき行動や、向かうべき場所を示しているのかもしれない。
瞑想中に見たビジョンの意味を知りたい。その場所と少女を探し出し、その光景を撮影したい。
そんな想いを胸に、僕はミャンマーへ旅に出た。
Nepal is a country that is said to have more gods than people.
It is located at the foot of the Himalayas, where you can see the highest view of Everest on earth.
Although the majority of the people are Hindu, it is the birthplace of the founder of Buddhism, the Buddha, who later became the Buddha.
When I visited Nepal to photograph some of my works, I met a man who experienced meditation and whose outlook on life changed.
That meditation is Vi Passana meditation.
Vi Passana means “insight” in Pali, an ancient Indian language.
It is known as the meditation method that Buddha ultimately achieved enlightenment with, and there are facilities all over the world where you can receive guidance on it.
Religion, ethnicity, national recognition, participation fee is free.
The purpose is not for profit.
I learned that there were Vipassana meditation facilities in Japan, so I took a course. I wanted to sharpen my insight and explore my potential as a photographer.
The essence of Vipassana is to be deeply conscious of breathing and meditation, to look within the body and mind, and to explore the true nature of oneself.
And while I was meditating, I had a strange vision.
It was the image of a girl praying against the backdrop of a huge ruin illuminated by sunlight.
Where is this place? And who is the girl?
I intuitively felt that the ruins in the background were Buddhist ruins, not ancient ruins in Egypt or South America.
Myanmar, the center of Vipassana meditation, is a sacred place for Theravada Buddhism, which adheres most faithfully to the teachings of Buddha.
Considering the series of connections, there is a high possibility that the place seen in the vision is the Bagan ruins.
In the world of Buddhism, people are said to be reincarnated over and over again. According to this idea of reincarnation, one’s current life is determined by one’s deeds (karma) in a previous life.
Perhaps the vision shows us what we should do in this world and where we should go.
I want to know the meaning of the vision I saw during meditation.
I want to find that place and the girl, and photograph the scene.
With these thoughts in mind, I set out on a journey to Myanmar.
